A Brief History of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

The first humans most likely came to the area at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula of Mexico some 14,000 years ago. The isolated area surrounded by the desert and the ocean was inhabited by a tribe of Indians known as Pericu when the first Europeans arrived. The area was known as a hangout for pirates as well. There was no permanent settlement of the area until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1917 an American company built a fishing platform off Cabo San Lucas to catch tuna fish. Shortly thereafter the Compania de Productos Marinos, S.A. was formed and the town was founded around this business. It remained nothing more than a sleepy fishing village until 1974 when the Mexican government made improvements in the roads and other infrastructure of the area that led to its development as one of the most popular ocean front resorts in Mexico.
In 1990, American Rock Singer, Sammy Hagar of the band, Van Halen, opened the Cabo Wabo Cantina which remains one of the most popular attractions of the area. It the latter part of the century, the area grew into one of the most upscale Latin vacation destinations in the World. The area is served by the Los Cabos International Airport, and is a popular stopping port for Cruise Ships plying the Pacific coast. The population of the area is only 40,000 and Cabo San Lucas still retains that curious mixture of a small remote Mexican town and one often seems like the World's largest amusement park.
Cabo San Lucas Vacation Rentals are among the most popular in Mexico. Cabo San Lucas villas are the vacation home of many famous Americans from the film industry. The town offers a wide variety of activities in addition to its miles of sandy beaches. The area is known as the Marlin Capital of the World, and is home to the world's richest Marlin tournament. The jackpot in this tournament is one million dollars. Sport fishing is one of the major activities, but there is also plenty to do off the water as well. Golf and horseback riding are just two of the activities available, and the area seems to be made for romance. The wedding industry is one of the mainstays of the area and many well known couples from the United States have chosen the town as the place to tie the knot.
