Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding area has been described as spectacular, exotic, and amazing. The scenery alone has brought tourists from around the world to the very tip of the Mexico's Baja California Sur State. As early as fourteen thousand years ago, humans were enjoying the pristine beaches of Cabo San Lucas, known by the locals simply as 'Los Cabos'. The same warm climate, calm weather, and beauty, along with abundant sport fish have contributed to the popularity of Los Cabos throughout the centuries. People today are just as enraptured as they were a millennia ago.
There are discrepancies as to when the actual town was established. Some sources claim a founding date of 1828 while others mention May of 1842. Historians do seem to agree that in the early twentieth century a fishing village was the first real development. An American fishing company had built a floating platform in 1917 for tuna harvesting and about ten years later a village grew around this endeavor.
In the 1950's, stars and starlets would often vacation in Cabo San Lucas. Tourism did not blossom until the mid 1970's , when the Mexican government put forth an effort to seriously grow their infrastructure which allowed for serious vacationing. Travel was easier and Americans found themselves drawn to the exotic siren call of Los Cabos. Not only Americans, but tourists from around the world were engaged by the vibrant nightlife of the resort town.
Several miles from Cabo San Lucas its' twin town of San Jose del Cabo invites those who seek a more laid back atmosphere. The party feel in Los Cabos is offset by the casual lifestyle of San Jose del Cabos. Because of the geographical closeness of the two towns, most people think of them together when they think of Cabo (the popular nickname of the area in the United States and Canada.) In searches for holiday destinations, both areas will often be displayed in search results for the other. Resorts also have both towns listed in their advertisements regardless of their actual location, be it San Lucas or San Jose. This is hardly a problem as vacationers can travel to both easily and many resorts are located on the coast between the twin cities.
While visiting Los Cabos, do not forget to visit Cabo Wabo a popular nightspot founded by Sammy Hagar and three other members of the rock band, Van Halen in 1990. Several years later Sammy purchased the shares of Cabo Wabo owned by the other rockers becoming the full owner. On October 13th each year, Hagar plays live at the club to celebrate his birthday. During the party visitors can find themselves in the company of movie stars, rockers, and other well known celebrities. Quite a way to spend a vacation!
