Cabo San Lucas: Mexico’s Coastal Jewel

If you’re looking for a vacation that includes the perfect blend of urban and outdoors - from nightclubs to restaurants, scuba diving to sport fishing - Cabo San Lucas may be the perfect travel destination for you.  Here’s an overview of what to expect when you travel to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Cabo San Lucas is located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, several hundred miles south of San Diego, California.  The weather is warm and tropical, with sea temperatures that rarely sink below the 70’s.  It’s situated where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean - an area of stunning views, strong ocean currents, and some of the best sport fishing in the world.

Cabo San Lucas is a small city with a lot of action.  Among the nightclubs, restaurants, and bars in the area is the famous Cabo Wabo, the nightclub founded by Van Halen’s Sammy Hagar.  During daylight hours there’s plenty of shopping, including vendors selling the beautiful native jewelry and handicrafts of Mexico.

Many people come to Cabo San Lucas for the sport fishing.  The strong currents in the waters off Cabo San Lucas stir up high concentrations of nutrients, which attract high-end predators such as marlin, tuna, and Dorado in record numbers.  Since the beginning of the century, sport fishermen have been coming here from elsewhere in Mexico and all over the world.

Even though the fishing is excellent, however, Cabo San Lucas is more than a fishing town.  There’s also world-class snorkeling, scuba diving, waterskiing, parasailing, and more.  For those who prefer to stay on dry land, activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and ATV and motorcycle tours.   And, of course, golf.

Cabo San Lucas is one of Mexico’s premier destinations for golfers.  There’s a string of world-class golf courses between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.  The architects behind some of these courses include Robert Trent Jones, Tom Weiskopf, and Jack Nicklaus.

Off the Pacific coast of Cabo San Lucas, you’ll find some of the strongest currents in Mexico.  Most beaches on the Pacific side are too dangerous for swimming.  But that doesn’t mean there’s no safe place to swim.  Medano Beach, Cabo’s main swimming beach, is always at the heart of the action.  Lined with bars and shops and thronging with sunbathers, it’s a place to see and be seen.  If you’d prefer a more relaxing and secluded stretch of sand, there’s always Lover’s Beach, which can be reached by water taxi.

As for accommodations, you have a wide range of choices in Cabo San Lucas.  Some of Mexico’s most luxurious hotels are located here. From hotel rooms to condo rentals, five-star luxury accommodations to intimate bed-and-breakfasts in the center of town, by the beach, or next to the golf courses.  If you fall in love with the area—and many do after just one visit—it’s easy to buy a villa of your own, so you’ll always have a place to return to.

There’s truly something for everyone in Cabo San Lucas.  Whether you prefer the outdoors, the nightlife, golf or sport fishing, relaxing by the beach—or all of the above—you’re sure to find something to satisfy here.  It’s no wonder Cabo San Lucas is Mexico’s coastal jewel.
